Sunday the 11th of March, the Fourth Sunday of Lent, is also Mothering Sunday, the Sunday of the year when we celebrate our own mothers, Mary, Mother of our Lord, and Mother Church. Holy Trinity Cathedral, the Mother Church of our Diocese, will be holding once again this year, a special Choral Evensong for Mothering Sunday at 5.00pm. Everyone in the Diocese is invited to join in this special celebration, which will include a traditional ‘clipping of the church’, which comes from the Old English word ‘clypan’ meaning ‘to embrace’. The ceremony involves the congregation holding hands in a ring inside the Cathedral and walking around the nave to ‘embrace’ the Mother Church. Following Evensong, supper will be served in Purbrick Hall.
