The Maundy Thursday Liturgy, (Maundy from the Latin ‘mandatum’, meaning ‘commandment’) contains a rich complex of themes: humble Christian service expressed through Christ’s washing of his disciples’ feet, the institution of the Eucharist, and the perfection of Christ’s loving obedience through the agony of Gethsemane. It is followed by a Vigil Watch in the Lady Chapel over the Sacrament to be used for the Good Friday liturgy the following afternoon.
